Tonight, our guests were “Scarlet Town”; 4 piece outfit, new to the club.

There was Jim on fiddle, Tony on guitar and vocals, Ruth on double bass, mandolin and vocals, and Carl who turned his hand to Irish bouzouki (I think!), whistle, percussion and bass.

Their sets of tunes were simply superb. I am unable to put video on the website but I’ll post a couple of clips on the Facebook page.

On the downside, the sound for the vocals was somewhat less than perfect, and following any words was extremely difficult. Mike was first up for the floor singers’ warm up spots. Normally, Mike’s melifluous voice runs like mercury through your brain, but last night it was more like gargling in the bathroom. Too echoey. (Is that a word? The pedants will be giving me a hard time.Pedantry is not a flaw, it’s the only thing standing between civilisation and people who say “literally” when they mean “figuratively”). Because of the size of their set up we did not have the curtain backdrop and rubber mat. Makes a big difference. It was apparently first time out for the band’s PA. They didn’t need any PA except perhaps a slight enhancement for the voice mics. The huge speakers were also very intrusive visually. Constructive criticism, don’t give me a hard time, the band were excellent.

Don’t get me wrong, everyone had a really good night, but it could have been so much better with better sound.

No club next wek as it’s First Friday and the line dancers have the room. Back Aug 14th.
