Posted in Club Night - What happened? on April 19, 2014 by Rhyl Folk Club
With a capacity crowd and a long list of singers, Andrew rolled up the sleeves of his K.F.C. shirt (other take-aways are available) and got off to an early start. If you want to see everyone who sang, look at the collage at the bottom, the list is too long to mention everyone in the blog.
It was a delight to see and hear some of the “old-timers” who had made the effort to be at the club on our 50th anniversary. Darryl got “premature clap” when, merely pausing in his song to take a swig from his pint of Chilean merlot, some of the audience thought (wished?) he’d finished and put their hands together. I owe a great personal debt to Darryl for his encouragement when I first started at the club over 25 years ago. If you think I’m crap now, you should have heard me then!
Hadyn Smith, looking very dapper, first sang at the club in 1966, and despite having to be somewhere else on the night managed to turn up to give a moving version of “The Fish Finger Blues”.
I’m not sure how Brian got through “All the little chickens”, with the wall of sound of farmyard animals coming back at him. Brian looks almost as young as ever (due to the picture in his attic), but alas, Jeff seems to have now stopped exfoliating and using his moisturiser and is showing 6 of the 7 signs of ageing; the only one he fails to demonstrate is rigor mortis. Jeff has been doing much of the graft for the club for years and doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. That unfortunately doesn’t stop me taking the piss.
Thanks to all the ladies who provided the food and to everyone who brought stuff for the raffle. Except Mike Hawkins. Those who read last weeks summary may remember he returned a perfectly good bottle of booze which he then won for a second time. Sure enough it returned again this week. Hopefully it has now gone to a good home where it will be treated with more care and respect.
It was fitting that young Mathew finished off the evening, after hearing the people who had carried the club through it’s first 50 years. Billy Connolly once likened life to a bus journey, where people keep getting off, sometimes before their stop. Over the years we’ve lost a few; Mike Hand, Kristen, Lindsay and of course, Ted. Due to the demographics of the club, it’s inevitable that more of us will be standing up and ringing the bell and we seem unable to attract a younger element to come and have a laugh on a Friday night, with the predictable end result of Mathew singing to an empty room (or a row of urns). We hope Mathew got his parents back to the home safely.

Thanks for these lovely photos and for the review of the night ….though……it is deeply concerning to think that the “truly terrible gags” provoked “infectious humour”……if these gags infect….. then we’re all in big trouble!
You gave us such a great welcome, hospitality and super singing!
Rock on for another 50!
Parliamentary Folk Arts Group Award
Posted in A.P.P. Folk Arts Group Award (the London trip). on April 2, 2014 by Rhyl Folk ClubRhyl Folk Club (beware of cheap imitations!) have received an award from the All Party Parliamentary Folk Arts Group; ostensibly for existing for 50 years and still going strong, but we suspect it was simply for being the best folk club ever.
Two dozen intrepid individuals left Rhyl at first light
– it looked a bit early for Emm Cee- London bound.
After freshening up at the Hotel, we were transported to the Houses of Parliament where the club’s resident M.P. Chris Ruane treated us to a tour of the gaff before the “do”.
The B.B.C. were also there, and provided the p.a. (with not an inconsiderable amount of hummmmmmm) as well as recording the proceedings.
The club’s resident singers (Jeff, Alun, Brian, Mike, T.Gwyn, myself, Glass-in-each-hand- Adrian, Angel, and Jess (spot the Oxford comma !) provided the first half entertainment, along with a very creditable performance from Group Chairman, Kevin Brennan. We did you all proud. No bum notes, no forgotten words. Everybody perfect! It must have been the free booze.
Someone must have forgotten to organise a raffle however.
The second half started with the presentation of another award to a young itinerant musician, Martin Carthy, who entertained us for the second half; a superb performance, shattering any delusions of adequacy I may have had.
Earlier in the day, Jeff had met Sir Tom Jones (busking in the tube) and had a photo to prove it. Must have made Tom’s day. There’s a picture of Jeff boring the arse off Martin with the details. Credit to Martin for soldiering on when interrupted first by Big Ben and later by other various Parliamentary bells and buzzers. Colin’s claim to fame will for ever be that he helped Mr. Carthy out with some of his words.
The party then continued in the Stranger’s Bar, out on the terrace and eventually back in room 3162 at the Docklands Hilton. Apologies to the poor buggers in 3163.
Next morning, many looked the worse for wear as we headed from the banks of the Thames to the green fields of home.
Altogether an unforgettable experience for which we must thank a whole bunch of people:- Chris Ruane, Kevin Brennan and Jenny Chapman for getting the thing to happen at all, Mike & Sheila, Alun and Jeff for doing the organising (Jeff and Chris lugged our p.a. all the way down to find it wasn’t required), the Musician’s Union for sponsoring the event and awards and Voel Coaches for giving us two fantastic drivers, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Hope I haven’t forgotten anybody.
Brian and Adrian were left squabbling over which of them would have Martin Carthy’s babies. It was also great to get to know people who I see every Friday, but never seem to have the time to chat to. For a slide show go to the link below.
